Jimmy Neutron's Nicktoon Blast photos (EXTINCT!)
(April 11, 2003 - August 18, 2011)
History and photos of the now extinct Jimmy Neutron's Nicktoon Blast simulator ride in Production Central in Universal Studios Florida.
The closing of The Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera cleared the path for an updated version of the ride featuring modern cartoons that most kids could recognize. The result would become Jimmy Neutron's Nicktoon Blast, an action-packed flight simulator ride based on the characters from the 2001 animated movie, Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius.
The general layout of Jimmy Neutron's Nicktoon Blast was similar to The Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera. Televisions in the line queue featured clips and segments from assorted cartoon shows. After that followed a preshow and then the actual simulator ride itself.
The preshow room for Jimmy Neutron's Nicktoon Blast is themed to be Jimmy Neutron's laboratory. The demonstration begins and we're introduced to Jimmy Neutron, his friend Carl, and Jimmy's robotic dog, Goddard. We're shown a layout of the Nicktoon Studios and given a brief introduction to Jimmy's latest invention, the Mark IV rocket.
Suddenly the alarms sound and there's an intruder detected somewhere in the laboratory. The intruder turns out to be Ooblar, an alien that kinda looks like an egg. He's here to capture Jimmy's Mark IV rocket, returning it to the planet Yolkus, home to the Yolkian aliens. The aliens need to duplicate the Mark IV rocket so they can use it to transport their army to enslave the Earth. Ooblar flies away in the Mark IV rocket. Jimmy and Carl hop into an older model Mark II rocket and tell us to ride along in an even older and "slightly unpredictable" Mark I rocket, which Jimmy pilot's for us by remote control. It's off to the main room to board our "rockets" and help Jimmy Neutron save the day.
Jimmy Neutron's Nicktoon Blast ride begins right there in the laboratory. Our rocket follows Jimmy and Carl as they fly out of Jimmy's laboratory and chase Ooblar through the sound stages of the Nicktoon Studios. We narrowly miss the Slime Tower before entering the sound stage for the "Rugrats." The gang is having a birthday party when we follow Ooblar through Tommy Pickles' house. The rockets crash through an upstairs window and enter a sound stage for "The Fairly Oddparents." Jimmy asks for Cosmo and Wanda to "help us," but they instead transform Ooblar into Elvis. Carl says something about his "achin' head" which is transformed into bacon head, attracting the attention of the Elvis version of Ooblar.
Carl gets Cosmo's magic wand and accidentally transports Ooblar to the Yolkian planet. We follow and eventually find ourselves in King Goobot's throne room. King Goobot unleashes Poultra, a giant alien that looks like a chicken. Poultra attacks us and destroys Ooblar's Mark IV rocket in the process. Jimmy's rocket loses power, and Carl uses Cosmo's magic wand to transport us back to Earth.
We make a crash landing in Bikini Bottom and encounter SpongeBob SquarePants. Spongebob thinks that Jimmy's rocket is a "rocket-powered jellyfish," and he uses his net to catch a ride. Spongebob "surfs" behind Jimmy's rocket as we race through the sights of Bikini Bottom. We end up in a large pipe that ultimately drains back into Jimmy Neutron's laboratory. All seems well until King Goobot suddenly appears and traps Jimmy and Goddard in a floating plastic bubble. King Goobot uses the remote to make our Mark I rockets dance to the Chicken Dance song. Carl manages to break free of the Chicken Dance music and uses the magic wand to destroy King Goobot's staff, freeing Jimmy and Goddard. King Goobot's shell is broken and he's defeated, sitting on the floor as a runny egg. Jimmy Neutron thanks us for saving the universe while Carl uses Cosmo's magic wand to conjure many llamas.
Just like The Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera, the post-show area for Jimmy Neutron's Nicktoon Blast had a variety of hands-on exhibits for kids.
Once again, times were changing and it was time to make way for a new simulator ride. Jimmy Neutron's Nicktoon Blast closed on August 18, 2011, over eight years after it opened back in 2003. Its replacement, Despicable Me Minion Mayhem, opened to the general public on July 2, 2012.
