Disney Springs guidemaps
previously known as
Disney Village Marketplace & Lake Buena Vista Shopping Village
Originally known as the Lake Buena Vista Shopping Village, Disney Springs first opened back in 1975.
The Lake Buena Vista Shopping Village began as a small cluster of shops and restaurants that continued the Disney "atmosphere" outside of the Magic Kingdom and resorts. Back in those days, a trip to Disney World also meant having a few days outside of the park for further recreation such as golf, tennis, swimming, hiking, and of course, shopping and dining.
In 1989, Pleasure Island opened next to the Lake Buena Vista Shopping Village (then known as the Disney Village Marketplace.) Pleasure Island was originally designed as a collection of nightclubs and restaurants for adults only. Shops and restaurants were still open (and free to access) during the day, but night time access required a separate admission fee. Each night in Pleasure Island had a New Year's Eve-style street party complete with a DJ and fireworks. Pleasure Island is currently going through an extensive re-theming process. It no longer has its famous night clubs, and admission is free both day and night.
In 1997, the opening of the West Side added even more entertainment along with unique shopping and dining experiences to the Downtown Disney complex. From the high-tech games at DisneyQuest to concerts at House of Blues to imaginative shows at Cirque du Soleil, it's easy for guests to find high-quality (and expensive) levels of entertainment.
Downtown Disney was divided into three sections: Marketplace, Pleasure Island, and the West Side. That ended in 2008 with the closing of Pleasure Island. From 2008 to today, Downtown Disney has been slowly converted into Disney Springs, an even larger version of the shopping and dining complex. Construction for Disney Springs is expected to be completed by 2016.
