Disney's Hollywood Studios guidemaps
originally known as:
Opening on May 1, 1989, Disney-MGM Studios became the third theme park at Walt Disney World.
The mid- to late-1980s was a race between Disney and rival Universal Studios to see which company would open their theme park first in the greater Orlando, Florida area. Both companies were striving to be the first to open an "operational movie studio" type of theme park in central Florida. To make the race even more interesting, the two theme parks would only be separated by a ten-minute drive on Interstate 4.
Disney won the race and the Disney-MGM Studios opened on May 1, 1989, a full year before Universal Studios Florida opened on June 1, 1990. However, just because the Disney-MGM Studios opened its gates first doesn't mean that it was a winner with the visitors.
When the Disney-MGM Studios first opened, the general public was very critical about the lack of theme park attractions. The theme park's two main rides (The Great Movie Ride and Backstage Studio Tour) weren't enough to go along with the other shows and walk-through tours. The park's first E-Ticket ride, Star Tours, opened in December of 1989, and many more additional attractions soon followed. What started as a half-day theme park visit soon evolved into a full day's adventure complete with a fireworks show called Sorcery in the Sky.
On January 7, 2008, the Disney-MGM Studios was renamed as Disney's Hollywood Studios.
Today, the Disney's Hollywood Studios theme park is an all-day adventure park with everything from a high-speed roller coaster ride (Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith) to the Broadway-style showing of Beauty and the Beast - Live on Stage, to the crowd-loving Toy Story Midway Mania. Fantasmic!, a spectacular nightly show featuring Mickey Mouse and a variety of Disney villains, continues to dazzle the crowds. Opening back in 2011, Star Tours: The Adventures Continue is helping to bring a new generation of Star Wars fans into the theme park.
