Disney's Animal Kingdom guidemaps
Opening on April 22, 1998, Disney's Animal Kingdom became the fourth theme park to open at Walt Disney World.
Disney's Animal Kingdom is a theme park dedicated entirely to the conservation of animals, a principle that Walt Disney himself firmly believed. The park's different rides and attractions focus on the animals, whether they're here with us today, extinct like the dinosaurs, or figments of our imagination like dragons and unicorns (or even Mickey Mouse ;-) ).
Like the Disney-MGM Studios, Disney's Animal Kingdom was also criticized for a distinct lake of rides when the park first opened. The two main rides were Kilimanjaro Safaris and Countdown to Extinction (now called Dinosaur), and the park had a couple of shows and walking trails featuring animal exhibits. But that was it. In a way, Disney's Animal Kingdom was like a larger version of Discovery Island (Disney's zoological park in Bay Lake).
Today, Disney's Animal Kingdom is slightly larger and offers guests a few other options including more thrill rides. You can get wet on Kali River Rapids, have some spinning and small thrills on Primeval Whirl, or even have a high-speed train ride through the Himalayas on Expedition Everest - Legend of the Forbidden Mountain.
